If you don't already know, celiac disease is a serious autoimmune disorder that affects the small intestine. It's triggered by the consumption of gluten, which is found in wheat, barley, and rye. And let me tell you, it can be a real pain in the butt.
Now, I know what you're thinking - "Emily, Nashville is the land of hot chicken and biscuits. How can you survive with celiac disease?" But let me tell you, my fellow gluten-free friends, There is some light at the end of tunnel with a few awesome places to shop for gluten free foods or just have a nice meal! First off, let's talk about the basics. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes damage to the small intestine when gluten is consumed. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye, which means that it's in a lot of the foods we love - pizza, pasta, bread, you name it. But don't worry, Nashville has plenty of options for those of us who can't eat gluten. If you're living with celiac disease in Nashville, there are plenty of resources available to help you navigate your gluten-free lifestyle. Here are some tips and recommendations to help you thrive in Music City. First things first, let's talk about dining out. Nashville has a great food scene, but it can be challenging to find safe, gluten-free options at restaurants. Fortunately, there are several restaurants in the city that offer gluten-free menus or options, such as Blue Sushi Sake Grill and Thai Esane. Many other restaurants are also willing to accommodate dietary restrictions if you ask your server or chef. One of my favorite places to go is Avo, a vegan and gluten-free restaurant that serves up some seriously delicious food. Their dairy free cheesecakes are to die for, and their Lions Mane "Crab" cakes are so flavorful. Plus, their desserts are out of this world. You have to try their chocolate pie - it's gluten-free and vegan, but you'd never know it. Additionally, there are several places that offer delicious gluten-free treats and dairy free ice cream like KOKOS Ice Cream Scoop Shop. When it comes to grocery shopping, there are several options for gluten-free products in Nashville. Most major grocery stores carry a variety of gluten-free items, and there are also specialty stores like The Turnip Truck and The Produce Place that offer a wider selection of gluten-free products, as well as multiple Whole Foods locations throughout the city. As well as fresh farmer's markets in the late spring to early fall. Another great resource for those with celiac disease in Nashville is the Nashville Celiac Support Group. This group provides education, resources, and support to those living with celiac disease, and they regularly host events and meetings for members. They also have a helpful website with information about local restaurants and grocery stores that offer gluten-free options. Finally, it's important to remember that living with celiac disease can be challenging, but it's also possible to thrive. And remember, Nashville is a city full of amazing food, music, and culture - don't let your dietary restrictions hold you back from experiencing it.

Double Zero (Venice) Thank the Gods this place opened! Oh my, it’s my new favorite. Yes they have Gluten Free Pizza Crust and yes it is delicious! Everything is vegan and they do all sorts of kick-ass vegan cheeses made in house, some of which are nut-free. They also have loads of gluten free sides, I love the meat-less meatballs and the roasted cauliflower is a must. A double bonus that so many dishes contain beans, so you can get your protein in. Kitchen Mouse (Highland Park) 100% Gluten Free, some items have oats. Best Gluten Free Breakfast of my life-ever!! This whole joint is gluten free! It is also vegetarian and dairy free, they do serve eggs but most dishes are vegan! I just DIE over the morro cakes!! Also lots of soy-free and nut-free options. Crossroads Kitchen (West Hollywood) Fancy is as fancy does, and this place is fancy. This joint may just keep you "Forever Young", it's Vegan & Gluten Free food at it's finest, plus the freshest of drinks. This is a white tablecloth sort of place, that serves phenomenal food. The food is a eclectic mix but order the crab cakes for sure! You pretty much have to make reservations any night of the week, but if your last minute you can grab seats at the bar. I also love the flatbread pizzas here! Sojin (Culver City & Downtown) 100% Gluten Free This place goes under the radar a lot, but the most off- the- chain sushi for vegetarians and vegans. Perfect cozy atmosphere and my favorite dish is the herb focaccia & gravy. They also have excellent lunch specials. Rahel's (Mid-Wilshire) Bad Ass Ethiopian food, just ask for gluten free injera, and tell them you are gluten free, so they don't serve you the dish that contains the bread with gluten! Everything is vegan and delicious! This spot is completely overlooked but maybe that's a good thing cause you won't feel rushed out. I recommend sitting at the traditional round tables to your right as you walk in. Ethiopian food at its finest, cool vibe, family owned, shared dishes, perfect place to have a good but chill dinner. Sage Vegan Bistro (Culver City, Downtown, Pasadena, Agoura Hills) A whole host of vegan and gluten free dishes. The Culver City location is my favorite with great outdoor seating. Great place for families and to bring your kiddos. 800 Degrees (Westwood, Santa Monica) Yep more pizza, this place is good for a fast casual place. They are so unbelievably strict about contamination that they get my seal of approval, they make the gluten free dough separately and they even cut your pizza with a special gluten free only cutter. In regards to soy sauce at sushi places, it’s a good idea to get the little packets of SAN -J tamari (which is gluten free soy sauce) that fit in your pockets or purse. My sister even keeps some in her car for last minute sushi emergencies. The above restaurants have lots of gluten free options, but many are not completely gluten-free restaurants so always check if the items ARE Gluten Free or Vegan, sometimes they give wrong information or change the recipe, so please double check! Most of these Los Angeles restaurants have amazing options for gluten free, plant based, vegan, dairy free, egg free, nut free, and are food allergy accommodating! Post Last Updated 7/16/22 |
